Reading a recipe like a score

Quantities are instructions. The story around them is optional, and often the best part.

Sample piece. This is fictional starter content, not a record of a real event. Edit or delete it from the dashboard.

This is a sample essay, written to show how the journal reads. It is not a record of a real flight, service, shift, or finished project.

A recipe is closer to music than to an article. There is a tempo, a list of players, and a sequence that fails if you skip the bar where the butter browns. You can write a paragraph about why you love cabbage. You still have to say how much salt.

So the kitchen on this site has two kinds of page. Essays, which can wander. Recipes, which cannot. The recipe pages keep their ingredients in one column and their method in the other, because that is how you actually cook when your hands are full.

The sample recipes are edible ideas, written to be replaced by ones I have cooked enough times to trust. Until then, read the quantities, then read the note at the top, and decide for yourself.
